1. JessEm 04500 TA Fence

Quick Review: This is a premium, precision-based fence for a router table. It appears designed for people who are heavy users or need a sturdy product.

Our Rating: 8.5/10

The JessEm 04500 TA fence is as premium as they come when looking into router fences. Both the appearance and functionality are best in class and this would have a full 10/10 rating if it wasn’t for the premium price tag.

One thing that this product appears to offer is precision. That’s because the fence is precision-machined to be solid, heavy-duty and durable and comes with an easy to read scale for accurate adjustments.

Chris Says: “Overall, we feel this is an ultra-precise fence for high end woodworking jobs. It’s known to be one of (if not the most) accurate router fences on the market, and the price reflects that.”

The adjustment knobs are even precision-machined and knurled to be both ergonomic and smooth to operate. Everything about the finish of this product is quite literally the highest quality and you can tell by both the visual look of the product as well as the functionality.

The bit guard can be adjusted for both height and depth to accommodate a variety of bits for versatility of use and the fence also comes with a dust port for enhanced dust collection. This is a particularly useful feature for those that have gone the DIY route and built their own table.

Pros

Cons

Precision: The precision-machined fence is one of the most accurate on the market right out of the box.

Heavy-Duty: This fence will easily handle most heavy stock thanks to the solid construction that’s anodized for durability.

Dust Collection: The dust port allows for enhanced dust collection which is ideal for those using a DIY router table and don’t currently have this function available.

Price: The price will be a major deterrent for most people with this model as it’s definitely a premium priced product.

2. Peachtree Woodworking PW1073 Supreme Router Table Fence

Quick Review: We feel the Supreme PW1073 is a nice lightweight and value for money router fence geared toward hobbyist woodworks.

Our Rating: 8.5/10

If you are building a router table from scratch then the Supreme PW1073 is worth taking a good close look at, as it’s known to be a solid and reliable fence with a great value price.

This fence comes with a dust collection port for enhanced dust collection and is compatible with industry standard 2-½” hose. It’s worth pointing out though that this doesn’t already come attached and therefore you’ll need to drill it onto the fence.

Chris Says: “This is a great router table fence for a DIY handyman creating his own router table. The inclusion of a featherboard and dust collection port round out this high quality product, and all at a competitive price.”

There are 3 mini T-tracks built in for featherboards and the product already includes one small featherboard for use however it’s not really heavy-duty in design so won’t cope well with large stock.

The key selling point with this product is of course the price range. We don’t typically like to focus on the price too much (as everyone has different budgets) and therefore prefer to look at a product’s features and benefits but there is no denying that this is a great value fence.

Pros

Cons

Price: This is an excellent value product with a price point that won’t be too heavy on most budgets.

Highly Rated: You’ll find that the majority of people who use this product all give the same recommendation, great product at a great price.

Basic: Compared to some of the more premium router fences, this product is very basic in design.

Some Complaints: Some people claim that they’ve received a fence that was not square straight out of the box.

3. JessEm 4010 Master Fence II

Quick Review: We feel this is an ergonomic and efficient router fence for professional work.

The JessEm 4010 fence is a precise and easy to adjust fence that’s well suited to contractors that need work to be fast and efficient.

The fence itself is heavy-duty and made from a solid aluminum construct whilst also featuring adjustable faceplates. There’s no doubt that this is a product built to last and you’ll get great longevity out of this fence.

Adjustments are tool-free and effortless and the fence tracks have adjustable scales for precise routing with positive locking knobs to ensure stable and consistent work.

You’ll also get a builtin dust port and offset bars with builtin onboard storage making offsetting fast and precise.

Many customers claim that they had great difficulty installing this fence due to poor instructions however there’s a quick guide video below which is great.

There aren’t too many additional features for us to look at with this product however we’re impressed by the precision and quick to adjust feature on the JessEm 4010.

Pros

Cons

Tool-Free Adjustments: The tool-free adjustments make this fence quick and easy to operate for those with a focus on speed.

Solid Build: The solid aluminum construction is lightweight but also heavy-duty and durable.

High Quality: The resounding opinion on this product is that it’s made to the highest quality which is exactly what you’d expect with a JessEm product.

Unclear Instruction: The installation instructions are not great which is why we’ve included the demonstrational video.

Quality Control: There have been a few issues with quality control for this product and fences arriving that are not square out of the box.

4. Carter Magfence II V2 Universal Magnetic Fence

Quick Review: The Carter Magfence II is a unique and innovative magnetic fence that focuses on the speed of adjustments as its key feature.

Our Rating: 8.5/10

The Carter Magfence II is the definition of unique. It’s assembled using a magnetic system which makes adjustment changes highly intuitive and incredibly quick.

Before reading further, it’s worth mentioning that due to the magnetic installation, this fence is only compatible with metal tables. Having said that, it’s still an incredibly versatile fence as it can be used on a range of tables for a range of purposes, not just routing.

In terms of fence adjustments and alignments, this is our pick for the quickest on the market. The two switchable magnets are all you need to make adjustments to the fence and the pre-drilled set screws allow you to dial the fence in perpendicular to the table.

Chris Says: “The Carter Magfence II is a no-frills, solid and easy to use router fence. With a simple no-nonsense design, it’s good value at a good price.”

This fence is one of the most basic/simple designs on the market and yet that is actually the key feature, it’s so simple that it’s easy enough for anyone to use regardless of skill or experience. The only downside to its simplicity is that it comes with minimal accessories or additional features.

Pros

Cons

Fast Adjustments: The fence only requires two switchable magnets to make adjustments.

Versatile: Due to the fact that this fence doesn’t need brackets or mounts to be attached, you can use it on a variety of different tools.

Lightweight: Weighing fractionally over 3lbs, this fence is incredibly lightweight and portable for ease of bringing it to a jobsite.

Only Works With Metal Tables: The magnetic attachment means you can only use this fence on a metal table.

Limited Accessories: This is a very basic fence with minimal accessories included, especially compared to some of the other fences we’ve reviewed.

5. Taytools 300015 Router Table Fence

Quick Review: Taytools have manufactured a very simple, all in one fence that has all the features that we would want for basic routing work. We feel it would be a good addition to a DIY router table.

Our Rating: 8/10

Make no mistake, this is a no-frills product however, the Taytools 300015 fence is a surprisingly good fence that has all the accessories and features that you’d need to cover most routing work.

You might be pleasantly surprised right out of the box to find that this fence is heavy-duty in build and has a much higher quality finish than what you’d expect for the initial price. We’ve no doubt that this could easily compete with mid range products in terms of quality.

While a few people claim that their fence was not square upon assembly, the vast majority have found the fence to be completely square and accurate.

Chris Says: “Overall, the Taytools 300015 is a genuinely solid fence that is good value. It’s heavy-duty and will easily handle most woodworking needs for an amateur that’s new to routing (or even a more seasoned hobbyist).”

We feel the range of accessories that come with this fence are great for hobbyist woodworkers to practice with. A bit guard, featherboard, dust collection port and adjustable stop are all included making this a great value fence. The T-track on top will also accommodate further accessories as you improve your woodworking skills.

Pros

Cons

Good Quality: The fence is heavy-duty and is much better quality than what you’d expect for the price.

Additional Accessories: The fence comes with a bit guard, featherboard, dust port and an adjustable stop.

Easy Assemble: The assembly for this fence is not only easy and user-friendly but the design is simple enough for quick assembly even for a beginner.

Fence Not Parallel: A few people have found the fence is not square out of the box however they are so few that we’ve put this down to rare occurrences of manufacturing faults.

What’s the Best Router for a Router Table?

Router table fences are an essential add-on once you’ve bought the best router table for your workshop. But you also need to make sure you get a good quality router that’ll fit well on your router table.

One thing to keep in mind is that compact, trim, palm and laminate routers are often not the best routers for table mounting. This is because they’re often not designed to fit on a router table and can often not fit the right range of router bits for your table routing jobs.

If you’re dead set on using a smaller router, you can check out our reviews of the best compact routers and best palm routers for an idea of what’s on the market. These routers may require the use of a universal router lift to fit onto a router table, but check the manual for the mounter you get. Our pick for the best router lift is the Jess-Em Mast-R-Lift II, which we think is unambiguously far above the competition.

What to Look for in a Router Table Fence

1. Firm and Square

This is probably the biggest and most important consideration. There’s nothing worse than a router table fence that slips or gives under pressure. You end up with sloppy cuts and a terrible end product. (Chances are there are a few readers who found themselves in this page precisely because they want to upgrade to a firm fence). So, our top priority is to find a router table fence that holds its position at a perfect square angle to the router bit.

2. Microadjustment Options

This is one feature that differentiates the higher-end fences from the budget models. We love a good rack and pinion fence adjustment that allows you to make millimeter microadjustments to get the perfect size offcut.

It’s also worth looking at the fence rail to see if it’s got a microfine measure which further helps with getting accurate offcuts.

3. Featherboard Attachable

The point of a featherboard is to hold your wood down while feeding it through your router. Without a featherboard, you might feel compelled to place your hand between the fence and router. Of course, when the fence and router are close together, this can be very dangerous. So, we personally choose to use a featherboard. The other option is to use a dedicated push block designed to keep your hands and fingers far away from the router. Either way, it’s always nice to see on a router table fence that there’s the option to include a featherboard. Even better, some of the router table fences in this review come with a featherboard included.

4. Easy Installation Out of the Box

When you get your router table fence, you’ll need to go about installing it. Of course, anyone buying a router table fence is probably a handyman already – so it shouldn’t be too much of a nightmare. But nonetheless, we appreciate when a brand goes to the effort of creating a clear and error-free instruction manual. Even better, brands like Jess-Em have created YouTube videos (one of which we’ve embedded above) to walk you through the whole process.

5. Dust Extraction Options

Dust extraction ports are a higher-end addition that might appeal to some of our readers, but most small-time handymen don’t have a dust extraction tool in their shop. If you feel you need dust extraction, though, there is the option on several of the fences above that you might want to jump on.

Final Thoughts

It’s not easy to find the right router table fence for your router table. This review of the best router table fences has provided some examples and our ratings of them for our personal circumstances. Personally, we’re quite bullish on the Peachtree Woodworking PW1073 Supreme for ourselves. Once you’ve got your router table and fence sorted out, you might want to take a look at our review of the best wood routers to choose a router that’s perfect for your router table.

Of course, none of this constitutes advice – professional or otherwise – for you or your circumstances, so do your own due diligence and consult a professional.

We hope this general information has been useful though as you go about searching for the best router table fence!
