A gas pole saw is always going to give you more power and responsiveness than an electric model. They remain a go-to choice for many landscapers, not least of all because you aren’t restricted by battery lifespan. So long as you keep a spare canister of gas in the back of your truck, you can top up and keep on going all day long.
The one downside is that they’re much heavier then electric models.
We’ve provided a full review of important selection criteria at the end of this review article, but for now we’ll get to the answers you’re after.

1. Maxtra Gas Pole Saw, 42.7CC
Our Rating: 9.5/10
The Maxtra gas pole saw is a powerhouse of a pole saw and offers incredible versatility when it comes to cutting and trimming.
There are two standout features with this model, the first being the powerful 42.7cc 2-cycle engine. Quick start technology allows for fast and easy pull starts whilst also having the power to cut through branches 7” – 9” thick.
The extendable pole is the second feature that we find particularly useful. The quick-release connector allows users to make use of the extendable pole to cut at lengths of 8ft – 11.5ft with a max reach of 14ft – 15ft depending on the user’s height.
The ability to cut at max heights of 15ft means you don’t need to use a ladder for most jobs (both home yard or professional work) which allows for both quicker and safer work.
Alongside these key features, this pole saw features a 10” saw, steel construct for added durability, a portable carry case and it can also use additional parts for versatile use on a range of trees, hedges and bushes. For additional attachments, however, you will need to purchase them separately. We feel that having an upgraded offer with all additional parts would be ideal for professional contractors rather than having to search these out and order separately (though the attachment option is still better than not having one at all!).
The customer support at Maxtra is exceptional and you’ll always receive a quick and helpful response with 24-hour service. This comes as standard with the 1-year warranty whereby they will also ship replacement parts in just 2 working days which is ideal for any professional workers.
They offer help with assembly though you can also check out this quick video for startup and assembly help if needed as well (not affiliated with Maxtra, just a helpful customer).
Powerful: The 42.7cc 2-cycle motor makes it easy to cut through branches that are 7” – 9” thick.
Extendable Pole: The extendable pole that can reach up to 15ft means it is well suited to most cutting jobs without the need for ladders or additional support.
Customer Service: Maxtra offers excellent customer service with quick replacement parts under a 1-year warranty.
Attachments Sold Separately: This is an excellent pole saw, though if you want to make a variety of uses (bush and hedge trimming/cutting) you’ll need to buy these attachments separately.
User Manual: Despite great customer service, many people struggle with an unclear user manual and we feel this is something that the manufacturer should look to improve.
2. Proyama 26cc 5 in 1 Gas Pole Saw
Our Rating: 9/10
An investment in the Proyama 5 in 1 gas pole saw is exactly that, an investment. This gas pole is in the premium price range however it’s perfect for professional use and you’ll quickly make your money back with this model!
The key feature with this model is of course the 5 in 1 attachment range that features a pole saw, hedge trimmer, brush cutter, string trimmer and extension pole. This range is ideal for those that are short on storage space or don’t want to carry around multiple tools (for professional use).
Each attachment is solid and could compete with many stand-alone options in each range allowing you to easily tackle most trees and hedge work with just this single tool alone.
Depending on the attachment used, the weight of the tool never goes above 20lbs meaning that most users could comfortably handle this tool for all jobs with stability and little chance of fatigue.
A surprisingly key feature with this product is not the additional cutting accessories (though these are great) but rather the additional protective gear and accessories that come with this for increased safety during use.
A vibration reduction shoulder harness, ear defenders, gloves, face shield and chainsaw bar carrier are all excellent additions that make this product great value and allows the user to work more safely and confidently with a range of jobs.
Multi-use: The 5 in 1 attachment range means you can cover all lawn care jobs with the same tool.
Warranty: The 1-year warranty means you can put all the attachments to the test knowing that you are backed by a warranty for replacement parts.
Additional Safety Accessories: The large range of included protective accessories is great for increasing safety during use.
Professional Standard: The range of accessories, attachments and versatility means this tool is ideal for professional contractor use.
Price: The price might seem higher than other models but when you consider the price of buying all the attachments separately you’ll find this to be a great value product.
Contact: The seller can be difficult to find/contact and therefore all issues or questions will typically be best to go through Amazon directly.
3. Poulan Pro PR28PS, 28cc Pole Saw
Our Rating: 8/10
Poulan has a surprisingly expansive range when it comes to gardening tools. Their Pro PR28PS pole saw is a good choice for those that require a quick and simple to use pole saw.
The effortless pull system (EPS) is designed specifically for those that want a quick start saw with minimal cord pulls and this model certainly delivers on that feature. The spring-assisted pull cord is also combined with a simple air purge bulb to allow for such a quick start.
Further to the above, this model also features an auto return stop switch which automatically resets to the ON position to further enhance the startup speed with this model.
A weight of only 14lbs makes this one of the lightest gas pole saws on the market and when combined with the quick start technology, you’ll find this is one of the easiest pole saws to handle, especially if you aren’t blessed with much upper body strength.
The 28cc motor is not the most powerful on the market but it’s still certainly competitive and will tackle most cutting needs. We’ve found this saw to be best for versatility and ease of use rather than all-out power so this certainly isn’t a negative point.
Overall, if you are looking for a lightweight and easy to handle gas pole saw then you won’t be disappointed with this model. It’s ideal for the hobbyist gardener who doesn’t need all the bells and whistles that come with premium models (though attachments are available if you do want them).
Easy Start: The spring-assisted starter system allows for quick and effortless starting with this pole saw.
Lightweight: At only 14lbs in weight, this pole saw is not only a quick starter but also easy to handle for the majority of people.
Accept Attachments: Poultons Pro-Link manufacturing allows this pole saw to accept a range of additional attachments for multi-yard care use.
Power: The 28cc motor is certainly competitive however some power has been sacrificed for ease of handling with this product.
Customer Service: There is no service option available like with more well-known brands which is problematic if you do have any issues with this saw.
4. Blue Max 53542 32.6 cc Gasoline Pole Saw
Our Rating: 8/10
The Blue Max 53542 is an inexpensive gas powered pole saw that aims to deliver a comfortable and reliable use without the heavy price tag that can come with premium models.
The anti-vibration feature allows for both comfort and control during use and a particular customer claimed that it was easy to use even at 70 years of age.
Even with the anti-vibration in place, it’s worth noting that this pole saw is on the slightly heavier side at 21lbs (without any attachments).
For the price, the Blue Max 53542 is surprisingly powerful with a 32.6cc motor and 10” bar and chain allowing for ease of cutting through most tree branches or hedges. We wouldn’t recommend trying to push this model too hard though as it can have a tendency to bog down or have the chain come off during use.
It’s excellent for most common jobs, however, we are just pointing out that it’s less suited to professional work and certainly geared more towards the homeowner that is just looking to do some basic weekend lawn care.
This particular saw is manufactured in China and as a result, the instructions are not the best, you will definitely want to use your own tools for adjustments and maintenance though once you’ve got it set up you’ll have no issue cutting for a consistent 3 – 4 hours on a single use.
Inexpensive: A great value priced saw for those that are looking to do some quick cutting jobs typically for homeowners.
Comfortable: Despite being slightly heavy, the ant-vibration feature allows for maximum comfort and stability.
Quick Start: The safety automatic clutch allows for a quick start and typically starts the first time.
Heavy: At 21lbs, this pole saw is definitely on the heavier side when you consider that this is without an extension or attachments.
Materials: This value for money price comes with the downside of cheaper plastic materials used for the construction of this product.
What to Look for in a Gas Powered Pole Saw
All pole saws serve a purpose: to reach places you can’t get to with a regular chain saw or hand saw. So, reach is one of the top considerations before anything else. When you purchase a pole saw, be careful about their claims about reach. The ‘maximum reach’ is often based on the assumption that it’s a 6″ tall person holding the saw at shoulder height. So the main metric to think about is the actual length of the pole itself.
Generally, a pole saw will have a pole that can extend between 5 and 12 feet.
Longer isn’t always better. Get one as long as you need but no longer, or, one that is retractable. The longer it is, the harder it is to maintain balance while holding your saw.
There are two reasons you want a gas powered pole saw. The first is longevity (You can just top up the tank. You don’t have to wait 5 hours for a battery to charge). The second is power. Gas powered motors are usually more responsive and powerful than electric motors. This means you’ll be able to hack through thicker branches with less worries.
This extra power you’ll get from a gas powered pole saw is why professional landscapers continue to use gas pole saws even as electric and cordless models improve.
There’s no two ways around it: gas pole saws are heavier than electric and cordless pole saws. The motors are larger and have more moving parts. But there’s also that issue of having to hold a tank of gas in your hands! Expect your gas pole saw to be north of 10 – 12 Lbs dry weight, then add the weight of the gas on top of that. If you’re not a fit, able landscaper, it’s a good idea to consider a lightweight electric pole saw instead.
A comfortable shoulder harness can significantly improve the quality of your work day. So, make sure your gas pole saw has a harness for holding the saw while in use. Another thing to consider is the quality of the handle. A good handle part-way up the pole that’s got a comfortable hold and wrap-around bar also helps you to keep your balance and aim when using the pole saw.
In our opinion, the best gas pole saw on the market today is the Maxtra 42.7CC pole saw. It’s a powerful model for the professional landscaper that’ll last all day long and hack through tough branches. If you’re just wanting a gas pole saw for home use, you could consider stepping down to a less powerful and easy-to-use model like the Blue Max 53542.
You need to make a decision for yourself based on your own independent research and consultation with professionals. But, we hope this product review has been helpful for you.
