Best Featherboards – Full Reviews
1. Powertec 71553 Table Saw Fence Featherboard
Our Rating: 9.5/10
Powertec is a highly reputable brand and the 71553 model featherboards are cost effective and high quality products that will suit most budgets while sustaining a good woodworking experience.
The featherboards have a good hardware package which allows them to be universal in fitting to most tables. They are also very versatile in use due to the fact that they not only fit a universal range of miter slots and fences but can also be double stacked for working with larger stock.
We’ve had to be quite picky here but the only downside to this product that we can see is the fact that the fingers are quite short meaning these featherboards are not well suited to narrower rip cuts.
The build quality appears very good considering the low end price. The heavy-duty and durable construction should last for repeated heavy-duty use.
Price: The undoubted key feature with this product is the incredibly affordable price point which will be hard to compete with.
Double Stack: The featherboards can be double stacked for use with larger stock.
Heavy-Duty: The high quality and durable build is designed for heavy-duty and long lasting use.
Short Length: The fingers are on the short side which means they are not ideal for supporting narrow rip cuts.
2. Wnewtools FeatherBoard for Table Saws
Our Rating: 9/10
There are not many products where you will find a very low number of negative reviews, but the reliable and heavy-duty featherboards from Wnewtools are a very welcome exception.
These universal featherboards will fit most standard miter slots. There’s also the added option of securing them with either a wedge-lock system or a T-bolt system for more versatility.
These featherboards are made from a solid and durable plastic for heavy-duty and repeatable use which provides good value considering the competitive price. You won’t be getting ‘cheap’ and flimsy parts with this product.
Adjustments are relatively easy and the featherboards can be mounted into the miter slot or onto the table fence for more stability during use which is great for a beginner or more cautious woodworker.
You’ll also find on most online reviews that this product is highly rated however we must admit that the lack of overall reviews does skew this data slightly.
Secure: The option to use either a wedge-lock system or a T-bolt system means you can comfortably lock these featherboards down with most tables.
Heavy-Duty: The featherboards are made from a heavy-duty and durable hard plastic allowing for years of repeated use.
Highly Rated: The combination of affordable price and simple functionality means that this is a highly rated product.
Reviews: We don’t see many drawbacks to this product and while we also can’t find many negative reviews, there aren’t very many reviews in total to compare.
3. Premium Hedgehog Spiral Featherboard
Our Rating: 8.5/10
The Hedgehog spiral featherboard is a product that we really like due to the innovative and unique design that is visually appealing, functional and easy to use.
The patent protected design (two active patents) really emphasizes what an innovative product this is. This patent protection also helps it to differentiate itself from competitors in a generally basic product category.
The key to this design is the single pivot point and adjustment knob. Adjustments are made to the featherboard with a single knob meaning adjustments are not only accurate but also quick and easy.
Versatility is another key aspect of this product. Not only can the product be reversed for use on either side of the table fence but you can also stack two products in order to work more safely with larger stock.
Quick Setup: The single knob adjustment point means adjustments can be made much quicker and easier than traditional featherboards.
Beginner Friendly: The simplistic design and ease of adjustments make this a great product to increase safety for beginner woodworkers.
Reversible: Being able to use this featherboard on both sides of the table is a great addition thanks to the reversible feature.
No T-Bar: The design fits most table saws universally however the lack of a T-Bar means that the product can sometimes be difficult to keep down tightly (in the miter slot) during use.
4. Bi-DTool Double Featherboards
Our Rating: 8.5/10
The Bi-DTool double featherboard is a simple and effective product for reducing kickback and stock lift during feeds.
The dual featherboards are versatile and can operate from either the miter slot or the vertically from the fence which means you can more accurately feed stock (particularly larger stock) with reduced kickback and lift.
A frustration for many however is the fact that the product doesn’t come with any assembly instructions. This is quite an oversight in our opinion and beginners new to woodworking might find it particularly difficult to assemble the first time.
If you are struggling however, a quick Youtube tutorial will quickly show you how to assemble and use these featherboards.
The variety of spacers are a great addition for use when working with larger stock and we can’t look past the versatility that these featherboards offer.
Overall, considering you are getting two featherboards for a relatively inexpensive price we really can’t see too many downsides to this product. They are good in our opinion for reducing & minimizing stock lift and kickback during use and should be a great addition to any table.
Dual Pack: When used simultaneously, these featherboards can provide maximum control for effortless feeds and minimal kickback.
Versatile: The dual featherboards can operate universally from the miter slot or vertically from the table’s fence for increased control of stock during feeds.
Hardware: The included spacers allow you to work comfortably with larger stock and are a great addition.
Assembly Instructions: The lack of assembly instructions can be quite frustrating for many users, especially beginners.
5. Magswitch Universal Featherboard Set
Our Rating: 8.5/10
Featherboards are a relatively basic safety accessory however, the Magswitch has created a unique offering that we’d put in the premium priced, luxury category more suited to the most advanced level woodworkers (or hobbyist with a budget to spare).
The Magswitch featherboards (pack of two) are secured with a magnetic locking function that will stick to the table or fence and support up to 95lbs of hold force for an easily adjustable and quick to use accessory.
These featherboards are some of the most versatile on the market thanks to the locking function. They are universal (provided they are used on a metal table) and can be used on either side of the table/fence or used vertically on the fence.
The low profile also means that this product can be easily used on smaller tables for more intricate woodworking. it’s an incredibly well rated product which shouldn’t be too surprising given the premium category.
Low Profile: The lack of adjustments needed as a result of the magnetic lock means that this product is incredibly quick and simple to adjust.
Versatile: The Magswitch featherboards can connect to either side of the fence or onto the fence itself for a variety of woodworking uses.
Solid: The mag locks secure into place and have no movement during use allowing for up to 95lbs holding force.
Not Quite Universal: While this may seem like a universal product, it won’t work on MDF tables or fences due to the magnetic function for locking it into place.
Price: There is no denying that this is a premium priced product and may not be affordable for all budgets.
6. Kreg PRS3020 True-FLEX Featherboard, Pack of 2
Our Rating: 8/10
If you are not familiar with Kreg, they are a high quality manufacturer that have built up a reputation around product quality. The PRS3020 featherboards are no exception and look to be another great accessory from Kreg.
The featherboards are made from a highly durable composite plastic that is designed for repeated heavy-duty, long lasting use meaning that this is more of a long term investment which should be kept in mind.
This model is made using Kreg’s “true-FLEX” engineering process. It is a process that helps to provide a featherboard with consistent and optimum pressure when feeding stock. This can help reduce the chance of kickback.
This product certainly isn’t competitive on price (Kreg are a premium quality manufacturer) though at the end of the day it is a high-quality, long term investment. Overall, it is a highly durable composite plastic build.
Long Lasting: The highly durable plastic composite body should provide years of lasting heavy-duty use.
High Quality: Kreg is a premium manufacturer and the product quality of these featherboards are a testament to this.
Safety: The true-FLEX design provides optimum and consistent pressure for reduced kickbacks.
Instructions: We feel the product instructions are not great (both physical and online) so do your research before making a purchase as the product might not fit your intended table.
7. Milescraft 7334 Safety Bundle – Includes FeatherBoard, PushStick and Grabber Push Block
Our Rating: 8/10
As a featherboard, we’d say the Milescraft 7334 model is on the basic side. The multipack bundle is the main drawing card (including push block and push stick) – these two add-on tools offer enhanced control and safety for woodworking use.
The featherboard is universal with ⅝” and ¾” miter bars to fit most miter slots and gives great support to the stock thanks to the use of a split rail system.
The included push block and push stick are both high quality and solid construction and when using a combination of all three items. Most people find that they have much more control over the stock using these items which in turn can lead to safer use.
The only thing we weren’t the biggest fan off was the adjustment knobs. This type of knob can be quite time consuming when looking to make adjustments and are far from the quickest style on the market in our opinion.
The featherboard is quite basic but we think it’s something that will get the job done. We probably wouldn’t have featured this model on this list if it wasn’t for the fact that the overall set of 3 (push block and stick) really creates a solid bundle that significantly increases control with many woodworking jobs.
Bundle Pack: The included push block and push stick combine to really help eliminate kickback and work with the stock in a safe manner.
Price: For a bundle pack, this product provides good value for money.
Not Best for Narrow Cuts: The featherboard does not fit into the miter slot optimally when doing narrow cuts and can be awkward to use comfortably.
Slow Adjustments: The adjustment knobs can be quite time consuming when making adjustments between cuts.
What is the Purpose of a Featherboard on a Table Saw?
A featherboard serves two purposes. First, it acts as a guardrail to hold your stock flat while you feed it through the table saw. It helps keep wood straight while you feed it. This can lead to smoother, more accurate cuts. For this purpose, it acts very similarly to a table saw fence. Second, it is designed to prevent kickback. The ‘feathers’ or ‘fingers’ on a featherboard (i.e. the slits) are directional so the wood can only smoothly move in the direction of the saw. It keeps up constant pressure on the wood and pushes it away from your body. This doesn’t mean chances of kickback are completely gone, but it helps minimize safety risks.
Store Bought vs Home Made Featherboards
It’s not hard to make your own featherboard. In fact, it’s a fun project that shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how intricate your design is. Plus, it can be made from scrap hardwood you have lying around your shop. So, why would you want to buy one from Amazon? The main reason people buy featherboards is that store bought models have additional features that are pretty hard to replicate. These features include:
Miter Gauge Slots
Your store bought model will likely have t-bar miter gauge slots that are very easy to adjust, allowing for faster work when you’re feeding different sized stock through your miter saw.
You can also purchase a magnetic model, which has the advantage that you don’t need to rely on miter gauge slots to get the perfect position for your featherboard. But, of course these models will only work if you’ve got a metal surface on your table saw.
Can I use a Featherboard on a Band Saw or Router Table?
Yes! Most store bought featherboards are designed to fit universally to miter slots, allowing use on a range of different saws and tables. It’s best to check with the manufacturer or on the Amazon product page to find out what’s recommended in order to ensure you’re using the featherboard in the router table or band saw in a way that is recommended by the manufacturer.
It’s not easy to find the right featherboard for your table saw. This review of the best featherboards for table saws has provided some examples and our ratings of them for our personal circumstances. Personally, we’re quite bullish on the Powertec 71553 for ourselves. Of course, none of this constitutes advice – professional or otherwise – for you or your circumstances, so do your own due diligence and consult a professional.
We hope this general information has been useful though as you go about searching for the best table saw featherboard!
